Abstract
Recorded 08 September 2025. Manuel Landstorfer of the Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik presents "Modeling Electrochemistry with Continuum Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics" at IPAM's Transitioning from Deterministic to Stochastic Interaction Modeling in Electrochemistry Tutorials. Abstract: In this talk I will give a general overview on modelling of electrochemical systems, i.e. electrolyets, electrodes, and their respective interfaces, within the framework of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. By sketching the continuum version of the 2nd law of thermodynamics, for volumes and and surfaces, we show how the general balance equations for charged mixtures can be closed by thermodynamic principles. We explore the modeling procedure of various physico-chemical aspects, ranging from compressibility and incompressibility in electrolytes, solvation effects, adsorption and surface reactions, as well and discuss validation strategies with experimental data. Numerical simulations will give a detailed insight into the models and allow for a model based interpretation of experimental data.
