Abstract
Illustration of mathematics » encodes a large variety of endeavours. It can be used for research purposes, for example as a tool for simulating trajectories of a dynamical system, or to make conjectures via enhancing some properties of the accessible data via images. It is also a tool for communication of mathematics, and that of creating a space for a shared practice and exchange. Finally, those who illustrate mathematics have an opportunity for an introspective reflection on how our communication of mathematics affects others, and hence becoming actors for societal change.
I would like to present several projects and the questions that guided me into them : a Streetmath project (with Marie Lhuissier and Bertrand Paris-Romaskevich) is about collectively creating chalk drawings in the public space, a book Mathgirls is a book on the sociology of mathematical practice (with Clémence Perronnet and Claire Marc), finally, MATEMATИКА: through a land of mathematics is a blog telling what does it mean to do mathematics in contemporary Russia.
