I will present an introduction to the construction and use of surrogates in gravitational wave modelling. This will be an overview of modelling choices and conventions, acting as an entry point for the surrogate methods described in greater detail in the tutorials later in the day. I will also discuss a set of outstanding tasks that will need to be incorporated over the coming few years to prepare the surrogate models for the gravitational wave observations of the future.
