After completing a master's degree in applied math at the University of California, San Diego in 2003, I spent about 12 years in the academic wilderness before settling on a professional identity as a tenure-track data scientist at Smith College. Along the way, I learned a lot about how important (and unimportant) our professional identities can be, especially in academia. In this talk, I discuss some of these lessons learned.
