Abstract
A whistlestop tour of rigidity theory in practice. Building on recent developments in engineering, rigidity theory, and the common interest in frameworks and graphic statics, cross pollinating knowledge from different backgrounds has resulted in some rich results. Real world applications, both explaining structural failures and optimizing designs, are highly related to well-known rigidity theory results. Yet there remain many open questions which can benefit from mathematical study, inducing the performance of space frames, the utilisation of symmetry and pseudo periodic forms, and numerical approaches to structural engineering design. Focus is given to open questions, particularly on the performance and design of space frame structures.
