Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013
Submitted by the American Institute of Mathematics (AIM)
An initiative to devote the year 2013 to mathematics of the planet earth was
begun by the thirteen North American mathematics institutes and now also
includes mathematical societies and other scientific organizations from
around the world.
The goal of event is to highlight the role mathematics will play in
understanding the complex processes of the earth and the
fundamental aspects of life and life supporting systems.
Over thirty representatives from these organizations met at the American
Institute of Mathematics in March, 2011 to plan
a range of activities for 2013. These activities include long programs at
the institutes, workshops, summer schools, and public events such as museum
exhibits and lectures. The year will be devoted to a wide variety of
interdisciplinary research, including questions about ecology, epidemiology,
meteorology, and management and sustainability of natural resources.
